Day 2 was more about scenery than ground covered. As I drove out of Gettysburg, I passed the battlefields wrapped in a fog yet to burn off:
An accident on the freeway set me on a detour past Sleepy Hollow (which used to scare the bejesus out of me as a kid - Really Disney?!?!?! a tale about a headless horseman for kids?!?!?!).
And then it was off to Skyline drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway:
This was a hell of a drive and virtually deserted. I've never changed so many gears in my life and although the long way to get anywhere, the vistas, wildlife (hawks and tasty, tasty deer), and hours of top-down motoring made up for the sacrifice in the miles covered category. Here's some pics:
Tasty, Tasty Deer:
After the many curves and ridges, the road spat me out near Roanoke, VA where I heard the quote of the day as an unbelievably nice check-out clerk remarked to the person behind me at her register as I walked away, "Well, y'all don't see that everyday. Ain't that a hoot, somebody from Canada in our store." FYI - she had asked where I was from as I expect my non-regional dialect roused suspicion.
Other unexpected sightings:
- first excessive portion sizes with mac 'n' cheese being listed as a side dish
- giant lemonade with nearly-forced-upon-you-by-staff-re-fills
- more extremely nice folks
- thickening accents
- 1st Chik-fil-a spotting
- horrible Mexican food for dinner.
Stay strong Fusco. The Double Down is only to be used in case of extreme emergency.
