It turns out that Asheville had more to see than I could fit into a Friday afternoon and evening, so I extended my stay in this eclectic hippie haven of Western North Carolina.
I spent most of today at the Biltmore Estate, George Vanderbilt's country home and the largest residence in the United States. It sits on something like 8000 acres and the scale of the place is epic. I could ramble on about all the architectural details, stunning stonework, millwork, and furnishings but that is why one should visit this place. The place is seriously excessive in all aspects and has a winery, working farm, and luxury hotel. But after spending many hours on what can only be described as the world's longest open house, I've decided that the Biltmore Estate would make the ultimate fraternity house. Ping pong table? Check. Bowling alley? Check. Various mounted animals from hunting trips? Check. Lion statue outside? Check.
After walking around the property and taking it all in, I'd like to re-iterate my long standing objection to the proliferation of flip-flop sandals as everyday footwear. I'd also like to share a photo of something that entertained me to no end:
Really?!?!!? Knee-high black socks with shorts. Why hasn't this man been stopped?
But I digress. Upon my return to downtown Asheville to hunt and kill dirty hippies, I came across this vintage clothing store:
Clever works for me.
