I woke to evidence of an overnight rain, a chill in the air, and heavy cloud overhead. The top stayed up and I headed North through the fertile land filled with artichoke, strawberry, pea, and cherry farms. One, should they wish, may purchase 10 artichokes for $1 or 10 grapefruits for $1, or a basket of cherries for $1. I know I've derided and chastised vegetarians for many of my years on this planet, but California's produce is so tasty and cheap, that I could go veggie if I lived here....as long as I could take down a steak every now and then.
Another day, another great drive up the pacific coast:
The less than perfect weather stayed with me right until I reached San Francisco, when the clouds parted and the Sun came out. I'll be roughing it for the next few days at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins in Nob Hill (sometimes referred to as Snob Hill) thanks to a good deal on the internet.
After checking in and getting settled, I went walkabout in San Francisco. Fisherman's wharf? Check, and far too touristy for me. Chinatown. Check, and I was much taller than most of its inhabitants. Walking back uphill to the hotel was less pleasant than the downhill stroll away from the hotel, but the cardio and leg stretch is welcome.
Coming up: Culture, art, more walking, visiting Alcatraz while doing my best Sean Connery impersonation, and much, much more.
And perhaps some higher education while I'm here:
